Why We Should Design Around The User

Effective mobile app design covers many areas, however, from a user experience (UX) standpoint, it needs to provide your users with a seamless, intuitive experience. For me, the user is the focus of my design decisions. My design process allows me to gather important information about the user, their journey, the points the application is addressing, and how to approach UI/UX in a way that is driven by all of these considerations. This allows me to consider not only utility of the app, but also usability, before development even begins.

One of the biggest challenges we face when launching an app is user abandonment. Typically poor user experience is the cause of this because we forget to put the user at the center of the design. In order to create a design that is focused on the user, we need to change our focus to creating a product that will address the needs and frustrations of the users, this can be accomplish by getting to know our users so that we know what needs to happen for them to achieve certain goals.

When we switch from being strictly a designer to a problem solver, we can provide a better product.

When we know, who, what, where and when, it can help us understand the demographics of the end user and gather important behavioral information that will guide product decisions, including any UI/UX decisions.

User journey mapping assists with mapping the storyboard and all the actions that are needed in order to get the user to the end. From a design perspective, user journey mapping provides the foundation of the UX in terms of structure and workflow. By understanding the actions necessary to get the user from point A to point B, we can begin to think about how to optimize the journey.
